The
club was originally established in 1978 to serve the
Yeovil area and until that time people interested
in model boats had to travel considerable distances
to other towns.
Due to the requirements
of health and safety, the club formed into a limited
liability company in 1996 and is now a club limited
by guarantee. It is not a profit-making organisation,
nor are there any employees.
The Yeovil club has
from day one, catered for all interests in model boats,
the exception being internal combustion engines.
Owing to the impact
on sensitive areas that the club uses, IC boats are
NOT permitted on club waters located at Sutton Bingham
Reservoir or at the alternative venue of Nine Springs.
Not all clubs have a restriction on IC engines. Those
members having these power units normally sail them
when visiting other clubs who do not have restrictions.
Active interests in
the club are yacht racing, scale sail, electric powerboat
racing, scale electric and scale steamships &
launches. The club also supports local community projects,
schools and both local & national exhibitions.
Visits to other clubs
are frequent, with other visitors coming to our home
waters with a variety of sailing, scale and electric
classes.
Scale regattas are
held during the year at Nine Springs in Yeovil.
The club has continued
to grow over the years with a great variety of skills
available to new members. Help and assistance is always
on hand, with young and disabled always welcome.
